QU10172 GM NV4500 4x4 Vibration Dampener

QU10172 GM 4x4 Vibration Dampener was used instead of QU10173 Spacer on both gas and Diesel 4x4 transmissions with certain year and engine combinations. The Dampener is located between the back of the mainshaft 5th gear and the nut set. This hefty part is designed to be an interference fit on the mainshaft, so, besides minimizing felt vibration, it helps keep the the fifth gear from loosening up and working the nut off. However, if the dampener does not fit the shaft correctly, it will accelerate the loosing of the mainshaft nut due to centrifugal force. Genuine NVG part not marked for origin, but we believe it is a U.S.A. made component.

Tech Note 1: 5th Gear Loss
QU10172 Vibration Dampener was only used on specific, mainly early and mid production GM NV4500 4x4 transmission assemblies. It undoubtably helped reduce 5th Gear Nut Failures on some GM NV4500 transmissions, but it did not prevent them. It was a large, costly, interference fit part that required a special press to install and a puller to remove. Also QT2028 special spanner socket is required to install and remove the mainshaft nut. As long as the dampener was in good condition and a tight press fit on the shaft, it was an effective part. If a dampener was damaged from improper removal or the mainshaft nut had loosened up resulting in wear on the dampener splines, the positive benefits of having a dampener were lost. In fact a damaged or loose fitting dampener will contribute to the very problems it was designed to minimize.

Tech Note 2: Dampener/Spacer
GM New Venture NV4500 4x4 transmissions use either QU10172 Dampener or QU10173 Spacer between the mainshaft 5th gear and mainshaft nut set. As far as fitment, they are interchangeable as all other transmission parts are the same.

**22 Tooth Mainshaft 5th Gears listed for 1992-2005 Dodge and 1995-2007 GM with 5.61:1 1st gear ratio. 1992-1994 GM with 6.34:1 first gear ratio use 19 Tooth QU10728 Gear. QU10728 is NOT compatible with Dodge 29 and 31 Spline Output Shafts.
