Tech Note 1: Gear Installation
QU10067 is a quality replacement 22 tooth x 35 spline Mainshaft Fifth Gear that replaces QU10006 original equipment gear for 1994-2004 Dodge New Venture NV4500HD 5 speed manual transmissions behind Cummins Diesel or gas V10 engines. QU10067 works on both 29 spline 4x4 and 31 spline 4x2 Mainshafts. Your mainshaft spline outside diameter should be about 1.79-1.80". QU10067 ONLY fits Dodge NV4500HD transmissions. With the original design of the NV4500HD mainshaft and fifth gear, the 5th gear was an interference (press) fit to the mainshaft. With the original configuration, a puller was required to remove the gear and a special installer was used to press the gear on the shaft. All the current production full-spline mainshafts are made so the gear will be a slip fit, so NO 5th gear puller or installer OR heating of the gear is required to remove/install QU10067 5th gear on a new full spline or worn factory mainshaft.
Tech Note 2: Losing 5th Gear
Dodge versions of the New Venture NV4500HD transmission in Cummins Diesel powered trucks are particularly susceptible to the failure commonly known as "losing fifth gear "
5th gear tooth breakage is usually caused by either gear misalignment or excessive torque. A known cause of Misalignment is defective aftermarket cast iron tailshaft housings.

Tech Note 4: In-Vehicle Replacement
The mainshaft 5th Gear can be replaced while the transmission is still in the vehicle if the tailshaft housing is removed. You will need QT2001 Mainshaft Nut wrench and either QT2000 29 Spline 4x4 Shaft Wrench or QT2011 31 Spline 4x2 Shaft wrench. You use QT2000 to tighten the Mainshaft Nut while keeping the mainshaft from turning with the splined Mainshaft Nut Wrench. Dodge Shop Manuals specify NV4500 Mainshaft Nut Torque as 270-280 lb.-ft.. If you are using the OE style, split, clamp nut, the Cross Bolt should torqued to 10 lb.-ft. after the nut is torqued to specification. Kits with the Gear, Nut Set and Tools are QK1054 for 4x4 and QK1116 for 4x2 transmissions

Tech Note 6: Lubricants, Sealants, Threadlocker
Early production NV4500 Transmissions used an anaerobic sealant (QU90003) to seal between the main case and input bearing retainer, top cover, and rear housing. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (QU90006 or QU90005) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case. Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (S24200) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads.
