Description
QU10173 1992-2007 GM NV4500 4x4 Transmission Mainshaft 5th Gear to Nut Spacer was used in lieu of QU10172 Vibration Damper on both gas and Diesel 4x4 transmissions with certain year and engine combinations. The Spacer, which is simply a machined piece of very heavy wall, special diameter steel tubing, is located between the back of the mainshaft 5th gear and the nut set.

Tech Note 1: Spacer
QU10173 is a machined, heavy wall tube that is located between the mainshaft 5th gear and mainshaft nut set on most GM NV4500 4x4 transmissions. Compared to QU10172 Vibration Dampener, QU10173 is probably not as effective in preventing 5th Gear Nut Failures, however, such failures are not nearly as common on GM transmissions compared to Dodge models. With QU10173, you can use either QT2002 mainshaft nut wrench or QT2028 special spanner socket to install and remove the mainshaft nut.
Tech Note 2: Dampener or Spacer
GM New Venture NV4500 4x4 transmissions use either QU10172 Dampener or QU10173 Spacer between the mainshaft 5th gear and mainshaft nut set. As far as fitment, they are interchangeable as all other transmission parts are the same.
