1957-1993 Dana 44 Solid Beam Inner Axle Seal Application List

*QU40159 and QU40055 Seals fit the same Shaft Size and Housing Bore Diameter. The functional differences have to do with the inside and outside diameters of the guide. QU40159 is made to fit axle tubes with larger inside diameters so the axle shaft guide is larger. If you wish to have one set of tools for all 1960-1980 GM Dana 44 front axles, QU40055 seal and the associated tools will physically fit any axle that originally used QU40159 seal. However, the reverse is not true. QU40159 will NOT fit many axles that originally used QU40055 seal.

**GM started the introduction of the GM 10 Bolt front axle in place of the Dana 44 for some axle ratios starting in 1977. For the 1978-1980 model years, the GM 10 bolt was the predominant axle. The Dana 44 was no longer used in 1/2 ton models after 1979. For 3/4 ton models, the last year of the Dana 44 was 1980. See QK4811 Inner Axle Seal Kit for 1977-1991 10 Bolts.

NOTE 1: GM Parts books list QU42015 Seal and a separate guide through the 1972 model year. We have been unable to verify if the Spicer data base used to create the above list is correct for the 1970-1972 applications, but the unaltered 1971 and prior axles we have worked on had QU42015 seal. For 1972, we have seen early production axles with QU40159 and late production with QU40055. We recommend you order QU40055 seals for all 1972 and prior axles.

NOTE 2: In late 1977 to 1978, GM started using Dana 44 axles with 3" instead of 2-3/4" axle tubes. The 3" axles used QU40159 seals and the 2-3/4" use QU40055 seals.

NOTE 1: For the 1972-1973 Model Years, Dodge Factory Parts Books list QU42015 Seal with a separate guide. Dana Parts Books show 1972.5-1973 have QU40055 Unitized Seal. We recommend you order QU40055 Seals for 1972-1973.

NOTE 2: The original 1977 to 1979 Dodge Parts Books list QU40055 Seal. The newer 1978-1981 Parts Book shows QU40159 Seal. The applications we list from the Spicer database are probably more accurate than the Dodge parts books. If you cannot find your Bill of Material Number on the front of the left axle tube, you can also ID the original 1977-1978 seal type by the diameter of the axle tubes. Axles with 2-3/4" diameter tubes use QU40055. 3" diameter axles have QU40159.

NOTE 3: For the 1985-1987 model years, the right axle shaft seal is QU40159 and the installer is QT1029, the same as 1979-1984 non-CAD axles. QU40191 left seal is located at the outer end of the left axle tube. QU40191 can be installed without special tools.

NOTE 4: 1978-1979 Bronco and regular cab F150 use QU40160 seals with a larger outside diameter than the seals used in other Ford Dana 44 front axles. The seals and tools for these 1978-1979 axles are NOT interchangeable with any other Ford application.

NOTE 1: For the 1955 R120, 1956 S120 4x4 models, no inner axle seal or guide is listed in the IHC parts books, however, the axles of this vintage we worked on did have the guide and QU42015 seal.

NOTE 2: IHC parts books list QU42015 seal and separate guide for all 1957-1971 closed knuckle Dana 44 front axles. Dana database shows QU40055 seal with integral guides used with 1967-1968 BOM 602508. We recommend QU40055 seal with integral guide for ALL 1955-1971 IHC Dana 44 front axles.

NOTE 3: 603057 is a Dana 44HD FA18 or FA25 closed knuckle axle listed in the IHC parts books as last used for 1973 1210. Dana lists it up to 1975. Both sources show the original seal to be QU42015 with a separate guide. We recommend QU40055 Seal be used in place of the original two piece system.

NOTE 4: These applications include all 1972-1973 1110 FA46 and 1210 FA45 Dana 44 open knuckle front axles.

NOTE 5: The 1974 and 1975 100 and 150 models all used a FA62 Dana 44 open knuckle front axle. The standard axle for the 200 was an FA63 open knuckle Dana 44. Optional for 200 heavy GVW ratings was an FA52 closed knuckle Dana 70.

NOTE 6: International lists Dana 44 axles back to the 1971.5-1972 Scout II with G prefix serial numbers. The first year Dana database lists a Scout II Dana 44 axle is 1973. We cannot recall seeing a Dana 44 equipped Scout II prior to the 1973 model year, but with International, you never know what special production or prototype models are out there.

NOTE 1: Our 1957-1965 Jeep Forward Control Factory Parts Book (Dated November 1964) lists QU15081 Seal for all FC170 axles including models with the optional Heavy-Duty front axle. Most aftermarket sources only list this seal to 1961 for the FC170 and show QU40055 for 1962-1965. The outside diameter of QU15081 is 2".

NOTE 2: 1958.5-1965 Jeep FC-150 had a 57" Tread width Dana 44 front axle with 1-1/4" x 19 spline inner axle shafts which replaced the previously used 48" tread width Dana 25 front axle in May of 1958. These wider Dana 44 axles used a now out of production and discontinued QU15082 (Jeep 919327) 1-1/4" inside diameter wiper type axle shaft seal with a separate guide. We recommend replacing the original QU15082 seal and separate guide with unitized QU40055 Seal with integral guide. QU40055 Seal has a free ID of about 1.155. To get a tighter seal fit on shafts with 1-1/4" diameter seal surfaces, you can install QU52092 Stainless Steel Wear Sleeve on the shafts. Make sure the Sleeve is centered over the seal mark on the shaft, then take off the removable drive flange from the Sleeve before installing the axle shaft.

NOTE 3: 1962-1969 and some 1970 Jeep J-Series Gladiator trucks had 1-1/4" x 19 spline inner axle shafts and used a now out of production/discontinued QU15082 (Jeep 919327) 1-1/4" inside diameter wiper type inner axle shaft oil seal with a separate guide. We recommend replacing the original QU15082 and separate guide with unitized QU40055 Seal with integral guide. QU40055 seal has a free ID of about 1.155". To get a tighter seal fit on shafts with 1-1/4" diameter seal surfaces, you can install QU52092 Stainless Steel Wear Sleeve on the shafts. Make sure the Sleeve is centered over the seal mark on the shaft, then take off the removable drive flange from the Sleeve before installing the axle shaft.

NOTE 4: The Dana database lists 1970 axle number 603212 as using QU15082 seal which is incorrect. 603212 has 1-5/16" 30 spline axle shafts and the original seal was QU42015.

NOTE 5: QU42015 seal and separate guide was used for all 1971-1973 Jeep Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles. We recommend using QU40055 seal with integral guide as the service replacement for the original two piece guide and seal.

NOTE 6: For the 1982-1984 model years, there was an optional, BOM number 610157 Vacuum Controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) system for the narrow track Cherokee and Wagoneer models with either 2.72 or 3.31 axle ratios. The right axle shaft seal is QU40160 and the installer is QT1086, the same as non-CAD axles. QU40191 left seal is located at the outer end of the left axle tube. QU40191 can be installed without special tools.
