Description
XV-402 1994-1997 NP241DHD Transfer Case Input Shaft and Related Parts Charts and Notes for 1994-1997 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 Trucks with New Process NP241DHD (Dodge Heavy Duty) Transfer Cases. The NP241DHD was used in some 1994-2002 Ram 2500 and most 1994-1997 Ram 3500 trucks. It differs from the NP241DLD (Dodge Light Duty) Transfer Case in 3 ways.
A) NP241DHD Includes a mounting pad and drive gear for an optional 6 bolt Power Take Off (PTO)
B) NP241DHD has 1-1/2" wide Drive Chain compared to 1-1/4" for the DLD
C) ALL DLD models and 1994-1996.5 DHD units have a 1-3/8" x 32 spline rear output shaft. 1996.5 and later DHD models have a 1-5/8" x 31 spline rear output shaft.
NOTE: XV402 no longer features an Input Shaft Exploded View. It has been superseded by XV4000 Complete 1994-1996.5 NP2421DHD Exploded View and XV4001 1996.5-1997 NP241DHD Exploded View.

Diesel and V10 powered trucks with NV4500HD 5 speed manual transmissions all have 29 spline transfer case input shafts. |
 Click Here for Photo. | Note 2: NP241DHD Transfer Case Input Shaft Length: For the 1996-1997 model years, an input shaft with an approximate over all length of 4-5/16” is used with all 46RE and 47RE automatic transmissions. 1994-1995 RH series automatic transmission AND ALL 1994-1997 Manual transmission applications have input shafts that are about 5-3/64” long. To provide a simpler reference dimension, some of our parts descriptions and notes may refer to the 4-5/16" shaft as a 4-1/4" shaft. Likewise, a 5-3/64" shaft may be referred to as a 5" or 5-1/8" shaft length. |
 | Note 3: Input Bearing Width: NP241DHD Transfer Cases were built with input shafts using either a narrow (5/8” wide) or wide (15/16” wide) Input Ball Bearing. While a narrow bearing cannot be used on an input made for the wide bearing and visa-versa, the combined matching bearings and shafts are totally interchangeable. For example, If you are doing a manual transmission swap on a 1998 Automatic transmission equipped Cummins powered truck with NP241DHD Assembly number 52098153, you can replace the original QU50640 23 Spline Input Shaft/QU50874 Narrow Bearing with QU10889 29 Spline Input Shaft/QU50873 Wide Bearing. While the planetary gear tooth profile is visibly different from the 1994-2002 narrow tooth planetary gears, the diameters of the 3 pieces (Input, Planetary, Annulus) are also slightly different. The 1994-1995 NP241DHD Wide Tooth Planetary is QU11482. The narrow tooth planetary used through 2002 is QU50494. See IDN-400 for more information. |
