Most New Process and New Venture 2 Speed, Chain Drive Transfer Cases utilize a sliding Range Sleeve the engages with either clutch teeth in the back of the input shaft (high range) or Planetary Carrier (low range). Two types of clutch tooth profiles are commonly found. Single Cut or 1-Way teeth are beveled in one direction. Double Cut or 2-Way Teeth are beveled the same to left and right.

The 1-Way tooth is most commonly found on vehicles without locking hubs or Central Axle Disconnect. In most, but not all cases, the matching Range Sleeve will also have 1-Way teeth to engage the input shaft. The 2-Way tooth was used on almost all the transfer cases up to the mid-1990s. From that point on, it is primarily found in applications with some type of front axle disconnect. The matching Range Sleeve will usually have high range clutch teeth with a 2-Way Cut.

The actual engineering reason using the single cut tooth profile is not known by us, but most likely, the 1-Way tooth Cut experiences less wear from forced engagement particularly in applications with electric shift transfer cases.

The cut of the Input Shaft and matching Range Sleeve clutch teeth is usually immaterial for stock applications as both types work well. When replacing a worn stock Input Shaft and/or Range Sleeve we recommend you use replacement parts with the same type of high range clutch teeth. For conversion applications, you may have to use an input with a different tooth cut than your original. Since range shifting is usually done with the vehicle stopped and the transmission in park (auto) or neutral (manual), the cut of the synchro teeth is usually not a significant issue especially with manual shift transfer cases.
