Tech Note 1: Assembly Numbers
QU50477 29 spline Input Shaft is specific to these Dodge NP241 transfer case assembly numbers: 52098504, 52098512, 52098676, 52098678, 52105024AB, 52105024AC, 52105024AD, 52105027AB, 52105027AC, and 52105027AD. QU50477 will also replace 29 spline input gears on these assemblies with wide tooth planetary gears: 52099030, 52099035, 52099037, 52098530, 52098534.

Tech Note 2: Planetary Tooth Cut
Many early production (1994-1995 and possibly some very early 1996) Ram 2500, Ram 3500 4x4 trucks with New Process NP241DLD and NP241DHD transfer cases have a wide cut planetary gear set. While the planetary gear tooth profile is visibly different than narrow cut teeth used through 2002, the diameters of the 3 pieces (Input, Planetary, Annulus) are also slightly different. See Help Article IDN-400 for more information.

Tech Note 3: Input Bearing Width
1994-2002 Dodge Ram NP241DLD and NP241DHD Transfer Cases were built with input shafts using either a narrow (5/8” wide) or wide (15/16” wide) Input Ball Bearing. While a narrow bearing cannot be used on an input made for the wide bearing and visa-versa, the combined matching bearings and shafts are totally interchangeable. For example, If you are doing a manual transmission swap on a 1998 Automatic transmission equipped Cummins powered truck with NP241DHD Assembly number 52105027, you can replace the original QU50640 input shaft/QU50874 Narrow Bearing with QU10889 29 Spline Input/QU50873 Wide Bearing.

Tech Note 4: Pilot Bearing
The Bearing Bore for the Input to Mainshaft Pilot Bearing is 1-5/8". For Dodge Ram NP241 applications, order EITHER X10000 Mainshaft Front Pilot Bearing + QU50083 Cup Plug OR QU50114 One piece Unitized Input Needle Bearing. Your matching Mainshaft (Rear Output Shaft) will have a Pilot Diameter of 1-5/16". An optional steel adapter ring for using this input with smaller transfer cases like the NP231 will be available soon.

Tech Note 5: Synchro Clutch Teeth
The Input Shaft Synchro Clutch Teeth are machined inside the back of the Input Shaft. The Sliding Clutch Collar will engage the Synchro Clutch Teeth in High Range. Single Cut teeth are beveled in one direction. Double Cut Teeth are beveled the same to left and right. Input Shafts with single cut Synchro teeth were only used on 1999.5 to 2002 NP241DLD and NP241DHD models on vehicles with automatic transmissions and some 2002 cases in manual transmission Ram trucks without the vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD). The actual engineering reason using the single cut tooth profile for late production automatic equipped models is not known by us, but except for assembly 52105027AD used in 2002 trucks without Central Axle Disconnect and 52105028AB assemblies for 2001-2002, all 1998-2002 NP241DHD transfer cases using the single cut input use the same Sliding Range Sleeve (QU50150) as all the other NP241DHD applications. Since range shifting is usually done with the vehicle stopped and the transmission in park (auto) or neutral (manual), the cut of the synchro teeth is not usually an issue. Tech Note 6: Transmission or Transfer Case Swaps
One of the more common swaps people do is to install a NV4500HD 5 speed or NV5600 6 speed manual transmission in place of an automatic in their Diesel Dodge Ram 4x4. To do this requires changing the input shaft from the original 23 spline to a 29 spline. If you have a 1999.5-2002 241DLD or 241DHD that uses a wide (15/16") Input Bearing, this is the 29 spline shaft to use. For 1994-1997, it is not so cut and dried. These years had a total of four possible choices depending upon the input bearing width and cut of the planetary gears, so we have to have the transfer case assembly number to verify what input shaft you need. Strangely, this Input Shaft was NOT used in any 1998 model year Transfer Cases as all units in that year took the narrow bearing. For a 29 Spline Input Shaft for a Narrow (5/8") Bearing, see QU10699.

Tech Note 7: Replacing 23 Spline with 29 Spline
If you are replacing a 23 spline automatic transmission or NV4500LD with a 29 spline NV4500HD or NV5600 manual transmission, use this 29 spline input shaft if your transfer case assembly number is one of these: 52098503, 52098505, 52098675, 52098677, 52105023AB, 52105025AB, 52105025AC, 52105025AD, 52105026AB, 52105028AB, 52105028AC, 52105028AD.
