Tech Note 1: Before Tear-Down
Before starting the tear down on the left side of 1985-1993 models with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD), run the vehicle and shift the transfer case into 4x4. When the 4x4 Axle engagement Light goes on, shut the vehicle off, securely lift and support the axle, then start teardown. (Optionally, You can also engage the front axle using a hand-held vacuum pump attached connected to the vacuum actuator) With the CAD engaged in 4x4, the sliding shift collar will stay in place on the differential output shaft which will make reassembly much easier. Also, inspect CAD components for wear or damage as needed. The following CAD parts are available:
Tech Note 2: Axle Shaft Oil Seals
Due to the advancing age of 1980-1993 era Dodge 4x4s, it is common to find one or both of the axle shaft oil seals are leaking. If you see evidence of oil around the inner axle shaft yokes, in the open axle tubes your inner axle shaft oil seals are seeping or leaking oil. Another tip-off of a problem is if you see oil residue on the right inner or 1980-1984/1988-1993 left inner axle shaft between the inner axle seal surface and the u-joint yoke. Since you already have the axle partly disassembled to replace the knuckle, you already are doing a big part of the work required to replace your axle seals.
To make your task of replacing these seals easier we offer the following Tool Sets and Kits:
Year | Tool Set Only | Tool & Seal Kit for Both Sides | Tool & Seal Kit for CAD Side Only |
1980-1984 | TS4830 | QK4830 | Not Used |
1985-1987 | TS4830 (RS only) | QK4830 (Right Side Only) | No Special Tool Required |
1988-1993 | TS4620 | QK4620 | QK4631 |
