Tech Note 1: GVW F250s
F-250 4x4s were available with either the 3800/3850 pound capacity Dana 44IFS or the optional 4600 pound rated Dana 50IFS Independent Front Suspension Twin Traction Beam® front drive axles. QU20291U Steering Knuckle only fits the heavy GVW F250s with Dana 50IFS front axles. If you are not sure which axle your F250 has, look at the front hubs. Dana 44 front hubs have an outside diameter roughly 3-3/8". Dana 50IFS axle hub diameter is about 4-1/8".
Tech Note 2: Caliper Type
Ford used several different steering knuckle part numbers for the 1980-1997 era Dana 50IFS front axle. There are three major knuckle variations depending upon the type of brake caliper used. From 1980 to 1985 the calipers are held in place by a slide and spring placed between the lower edge of the caliper and the knuckle casting. 1986-1994 calipers are retained by upper and lower long, diamond shaped rubber and steel pins. Each end of the caliper has a V-shaped groove as does the caliper support arms that are part of the knuckle. 1995-1997 knuckles are made for bolt-on caliper anchor plates. There are also casting differences for the first two knuckle types depending upon the year.
Tech Note 3: Ball Joints
This Steering Knuckle does not include Ball Joints. Order QK4561 Complete Ball Joint Set or QA50095 Upper and QU50056 Lower Individual Ball Joints.
Tech Note 4: Bushings
The axle beams were the same for 1980-1985 axles, but different replaceable upper ball joint camber bushings were used depending upon the year and suspension. In many, perhaps most cases, the original camber bushing was replaced during a front end alignment at some point in the vehicles history. If possible, reuse the camber bushing from your old ball joints, then have your front end aligned by a competent front end specialist who can check and change toe-in, camber, and caster as needed.
Tech Note 5: Pivot Bushing
Due to the age of the vehicles this knuckle fits, I recommend you replace the Axle Beam Pivot Bushing with a new QU50097 Axle Beam Pivot Bushing at the same time you replace the knuckle and ball joints.
