Tech Note 1: Product Note
QU10099 is a  28 tooth, bearing supported mainshaft 3rd gear that is ONLY compatible with 1992-1994 GM New Venture NV4500 5 speed manual transmissions with 6.34:1 1st and reverse gear ratios. Matching NV4500 countershafts have 32 3rd gear teeth. QU10099 is NOT compatible with medium ratio 1995-2007 GM or 1992-2005 Dodge NV4500 models with the 5.61:1 1st gear ratio.

Tech Note 2: 3rd Gear Failures
3rd Gear tooth failures in New Venture NV4500 5 speed manual transmissions are commonplace in transmissions mated to enhanced horsepower Diesel engines. For stock or near stock power applications, 3rd gear failures are usually a lubrication related failure that damages the bearing bore. Another failure is synchronizer clutch tooth wear and or synchro cone wear caused by incorrect lubricant or the use of cheap imported bronze synchro rings instead of OE style lined steel rings. Problems with your clutch not fully releasing or crankshaft pilot bearing/bushing dragging can also lead to clutch teeth wear from "grinding" the gears during shifting.

There are claims that cryogenically treating NV4500 gears will increase gear strength as much as 30%. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any peer-reviewed documentary evidence to support those claims. Cryogenically treating gears is primarily a cold-hardening process that changes the molecular structure of steel to decrease wear while retaining or increasing hardness. If properly done, it is probable the cryogenic treatment process does slightly increase the impact and fatigue resistance of NV4500 gears, but not enough to significantly increase the ability of an NV4500 transmission to reliably handle more than 600 Lb.-Ft. of input torque especially considering the maximum factory torque rating of the  GM NV4500 transmission is only 450 Lb.-Ft..
