Tech Note 1: Removal
Your brakes, wheel hubs, axle shafts, and differential must be removed from the housing to replace your QU40055 inner axle shaft seals.

Tech Note 2: Seals
Dana used both one piece and two piece Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seals in early Dana 44 front axles. Dimensionally, the two types are interchangeable and by the early 1970's, all the axles were built with the one piece seal that combines the Seal and Guide into a single unit. I always replace the original two piece QU42015 seal and separate sheet metal guide with QU40055 one piece Seal as I believe it has greater sealing ability plus longer life.

Tech Note 3: Variance
The inner axle seals used on Chevy, Dodge, Ford, GMC, IHC, and Jeep closed and open knuckle Dana Model 44 Front Axles will vary by year and model.

Tech Note 4: Depth Stop
QK4871 uses QT1041 application specific Depth Stop Seal Installer which has a raised flange on it that will stop against the Dana 44 axle bore face when QU40055 seal is at the correct depth.

Tech Note 5: Seal/Tool Match
Due to the way we have to make the tool to function, your Seal Installer and Seal MUST match. QT1041 Installer will only work with original equipment design, CR manufactured seals such as our QU40055. Seals manufactured by other seal manufacturers WILL NOT WORK WITH THIS INSTALLER!!!!

Tech Note 6: Clean
Once the axle is disassembled, the old seals can be easily removed with our QK4647 Seal Remover Tool Set or other suitable tools such as a length of sturdy pipe that will fit inside the axle tube. You will also need to clean the inside of the axle tube to remove dirt and crud that could get pushed into your new seal during reassembly.
