QT1165 Model 44 Seal Installer

Tech Note 2: Must be Removed
Your brakes, wheel hubs, axle shafts, and differential must be removed from the housing to replace your QU40055 inner axle shaft seals.
Tech Note 3: See Article
The inner axle seals used on Chevy, Dodge, Ford, GMC, IHC, and Jeep closed and open knuckle Dana Model 44 Front Axles will vary by year and model. See Article.
Tech Note 4: Adjustable Depth
QK4872 uses QT1165 application specific adjustable depth installer which allows you to offset the seal to miss a worn spot on the axle shaft. This is a valuable feature, however, YOU have to determine the final depth of the seal. It is unlikely, but possible to seat the seal too deep with QT1165 installer which can put the seal beyond the machined seal surface of the axle shaft. We also offer QK4871 Seal Installer Set which uses QT1041 specific Depth Stop Seal Installer which has a raised flange on it that will stop against the axle bore face when the seal is at the correct depth. This is a more fool-proof setup than QK4872, but it is a little more expensive and you can not vary the seal depth to miss a groove worn in the axle shaft.
Tech Note 5: Use Correct Seals
Due to the way we have to make the tool to function, your Seal Installer and Seal MUST match. QT1165 Installer will only work with original equipment design, CR manufactured seals such as our QU40055. Seals manufactured by other seal manufacturers WILL NOT WORK WITH THIS INSTALLER!!!!
Tech Note 6: Removal of Old Seals
Once the axle is disassembled, the old seals can be easily removed with our QK4647 Seal Remover Tool Set or other suitable tool such as a length of sturdy pipe that will fit inside the axle tube. You will also need to clean the inside of the axle tube to remove dirt and crud that could get pushed into your new seal during reassembly.
Tech Note 7: Early Dana 44 Axles
Most closed knuckle and early production Dana 44 axles used a two piece axle seal and guide set that had QU42015 seal and a separate sheet metal guide. QU40055 Seal replaces both parts.
