Tech Note 1: Driveshafts
Driveshafts need to be retubed anytime the tubing gets bent or dented. Driveshaft assembly can be done by any competent machinest, but best results are usually obtained from dedicated driveshaft specialists who can both build and balance the finished shaft. Tech Note 2: Strength
The strength of driveshaft tubing is dependent upon the material, length, outside diameter, and thickness of the tubing. All driveshaft tubing is high quality, but for a given size, steel is stronger than aluminum or graphite. Prior to the 1999 Model year, Ford used 2.5" diameter tubing for full size 4x4 front driveshafts, but the higher torque output of newer engines required a strength upgrade.
