Tech Note 2: Lubrication
The New Process NP200 Transfer Case is a World War II design gear box that was intended for relatively short distance driving at modest speeds. The constant mesh gear design is inherently inefficient and when operated for extended periods at modern highway speeds a great amount of heat will be generated because all 3 shafts are under load when driving. If you are going to operate your NP200 under long distance and/or high speed conditions I strongly recommend you use a synthetic fluid of the weight recommended in your owners manual.

Tech Note 4: NP200 Used In
The left drive, gear driven, New Process NP200 remote mount transfer case was used in production 4x4s from 1946-1978, plus it also found in a wide variety of industrial equipment including Timberjack log skidders. The NP200 can be identified by its dual rear output shafts. The upper shaft usually incorporates a parking brake mechanism and the lower shaft is the output to rear axle. The NP200 used in Dodge, International, and Jeep 4x4 trucks features a 1:1 ratio high range and a 1.96:1 low range. Under modern highway conditions, NP200 transfer cases use more power and run much hotter than later model cases as the power transfer path in all ranges is through all three shafts. Strength-wise, the NP200 is more than capable of handling the relatively low horsepower straight 6 and V8 engines it was originally driven by, but the 1-3/8", coarse spline output shafts are inadequate for repower conversions with high torque modern engines. The NP200 was used in 1946-1968 Dodge civilian 1 tons, 1951-1968 Dodge M37, M43 series military 3/4 tons, 1967-1969 Jeep M715, M725, M726 series 1-1/4 ton military trucks, 1969-1978 Dodge export model WM300 1 tons, and in small numbers by International prior to 1956.
