For the 1980 model year, Dodge introduced a new, Dana 44 axle with serviceable wheel bearings, lockout hubs, and disc brakes. The new axle replaced the unreliable live spindle, full time Dana 44 front axle used from late 1974 through 1979. 1980 and 1981 axle were equipped with Dana manual hubs. 1982-1984 trucks had Borg-Warner automatic locking hubs.
