In the mid 1950's, New Process redesigned the NP200 to make the closely related NP201. The primary external difference between the NP200 and NP201 is the location of the rear output shaft. With the NP201, the rear output shaft is inline with the input shaft, so power transfer in 4x2 high range is directly from the input shaft to the rear output shaft. The inline design means the idler and front output shafts are not used to transfer power in 4x2 high range resulting in cooler and more efficient operation. Also, with the NP201, the rear differential pinion can be centered instead of offset to the left side as was required with the NP200. The NP201 was used by International from late 1955 until early 1960. The NP201 was replaced by the New Process NP202 in International 4x4s in 1960.
