Tech Note 1: Please Note
Factory Shop Manuals are excellent and authoritative sources of information, but they are written by highly skilled tech teams for the professional automotive technician with good reading and comprehension skills. The service procedures often skip over small steps that the pro performs without even thinking about it. The illustrations are usually good, but lack fine detail that would help the first time or Do-It Yourself (DIY) mechanic. As an example, my TM1003 NV4500 Transmission Service Manual has 116 pages and over 400 color photographs plus very detailed rebuild and technical information to cover rebuilding a NV4500 5 Speed Manual Transmission. The Dodge Factory Service Manual coverage includes a few dozen line drawings spread over about 40 pages. On the other hand, the Dodge Factory Manual pages include transmission removal and installation information which my TM1003 does not.
Tech Note 2: 1980 Changes
The 1980 was a big year for change for Dodge 4x4 trucks. Externally, 1980 trucks pretty much look the same as 1972-1979 vehicles, but several BIG changes occured for the 4x4 line. Thanks to the 1979 Oil Crisis, Dodge had to dump the gas-sucking and problem plagued full time 4x4 transfer case and live spindle front axles. For 1980, Dodge brought back the rugged and reliable NP205 part time transfer case for the W300 and W400. For the lighter 4x4s, a lightweight NP208 transfer case replaced the cumbersome 1975-1979 NP203 full time unit and the Dana 44 live-spindle front axle was replaced by a much more reliable Dana 44 with serviceable wheel bearings. All the 4x4s were available with fuel-saving lockout hubs.
