Tech Note 1: Please Note
Factory Shop Manuals are excellent sources of information, but they are written by highly skilled tech teams for the professional automotive technician with good reading and comprehension skills. The service procedures often skip over small steps that the pro performs without even thinking about it. The illustrations are usually good, but lack fine detail that would help the first time or Do-It Yourself (DIY) mechanic. As an example, my TM1003 NV4500 Transmission Service Manual has 116 pages and over 400 color photographs plus very detailed rebuild and technical information to cover rebuilding a NV4500 5 Speed Manual Transmission. The Dodge Factory Service Manual coverage includes a few dozen line drawings spread over about 40 pages. On the other hand, the Dodge Factory Manual pages include transmission removal and installation information which my TM1003 does not.
Tech Note 2: 1994-2002 Changes
For the 1994 model year, Dodge introduced a radically redesigned Ram full size pickup that received cab and front fender styling cues from the original WWII era Dodge Power Wagon. Some of the major drivetrain changes included a 8.0L V-10 gas engine for Ram 2500, Ram 3500, 12.4" Clutch instead of 13" for Diesel models, 5 Speed New Venture Manual Transmissions, Coil Spring Front Suspension with unitized wheel bearings for 4x4 models, Vacuum Controlled Central Axle Disconnect for all 4x4s, NP231DHD Transfer Case for Ram 1500, NP241DLD Transfer Case for Ram 2500, NP241DHD Transfer Case for Ram 3500 (optional on 2500), Spicer front 4x4 CV driveshaft instead of Saginaw, and Dana 80 Rear Axles for Ram 2500 Diesel trucks with manual transmissions and all Ram 3500 models. Dodge also dropped the D for 4x2 and W for 4x4 model prefix for 1994, effective with the 1994 model year the prefix RAM is used for all full size models. Some major changes to what is often referred to as the 1994-2002 "2nd Generation Ram Truck" included the 4 Door Quad Cab® (1998), NV5600 6 Speed Manual Transmission (1999), High Output Cummins Diesel (2001), New Body Style for Ram 1500 (2002).
Tech Note 3: 1994-2002 Front Axles
From 1994 to 2001, all Ram 4x4 models were equipped with coil front springs and Dana Spicer solid, Front Beam-design Iron (FBI) drive axles with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD). For 2002, the Ram 1500 4x4 has a new body style with torsion bars and Independent Front Suspension (IFS). The 2002 Ram 2500, Ram 3500 front axles were offered with or without CAD.

Tech Note 4: 1994-2002 Rear Axles
All 1994 to 2002 Ram trucks have Rear Beam-design Iron (RBI) rear axles. Ram 1500 and 1994-1998 gas powered Light Duty Ram 2500 models have Chrysler 9-1/4" Semi-float rear axles. All other Gas powered Ram 2500 trucks have Dana 60 248 RBI 5,500 lb. or 6200 lb. rated Full Floating Rear Axles. Ram 2500 trucks with Diesel engines and automatic transmission use Dana 70 267 RBI Full Floating Rear Axles. Diesel Powered Ram 2500 models with manual transmissions and all Ram 3500 trucks have Dana 80 286 RBI Full Floating Rear Axles.
Tech Note 5: 1994-2002 Transmissions
New Venture Gear supplied all the manual transmissions used in 1994-2002 Ram trucks. All have an overdrive top gear.
NV3500 5 speed: Ram 1500
NV4500 5 Speed: Ram 2500, Ram 3500
NV5600 6 Speed 1999-2002 Ram 2500, Ram 3500
Tech Note 6: 1994-2002 Transfer Cases
The transfer cases used in 1994-2002 Ram trucks were built by New Process Gear (Part of New Venture Gear) in Syracuse New York. All are manual shift except for the NV243 Electric Shift transfer case that was optional on the 2002 Ram 1500. All transfer case models are considered "Shift on the Fly" units that can be engaged and disengaged while the vehicle is in motion. For trucks with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD), Shift on the Fly operation is dependent upon proper operation of the front axle CAD system.
