Tech Note 1: Eliminating Axle Shaft Spline Failure
Ford introduced a redesigned Dana 44IFS Twin Traction Beam Front Axle during the 1983 model year that uses a right Axle Slip Joint protected by a flexible rubber Boot instead of a pressed on Yoke Seal. The Slip Yoke Boot eliminated one of the chronic problems the previous 1980-early 1983 axle had, namely axle shaft spline failure from water and grit infiltrating past the seal.
Tech Note 2: Replace Worn Boot
Replace any Slip Yoke Boot that is damaged or torn. A damaged Boot will allow water and crud in which will destroy your axle shaft splines. Axle shafts are expensive!
Tech Note 3: Replace Boot Clamps
Always replace the Boot Clamps anytime they are removed. QU40084 (Slip Yoke side) and QU40085 (Axle Shaft side) Boot Clamps will provide a 360 leak-proof seal between the Boot and Yoke or Shaft. Makeshift methods like Tie Straps and Twisted Wire cannot seal a boot 100%! Rusted, worn out axle shaft splines will cost you BIG Dollars!
Tech Note 4: Pre-Grease
Always pregrease the axle shaft and slip yoke splines before assembly with QU90018 or similar NLGI #2 GC-LB water resistant grease.
Tech Note 5: Installation Tip
When starting the axle shaft splines into your new Slip Yoke, verify that the Slip Yoke and Right Axle Shaft are as close to being in phase as possible. (The center line of the yoke holes line up to each other with little or no offset.)
