Tech Note 1: Placement
QU40515 Bearing and QU40088 Seal press into your differential housing. QU40226 Snap Ring fits the groove in the inboard side of QU40571 Differential Output Shaft.

Tech Note 2: Shafts
The Axle Shaft Slip Yoke u-joint connects to the right differential output shaft. Ford used two types of diff output shafts. Early production diff output shafts use QU40173 Tapered Roller Bearing Kit and can be removed by unbolting the 3 bolt external bearing retainer flange from the diff housing. Later production diff output shafts (circa 1983 and after) that use QU40534 Kit are retained by a snap ring at the inboard end of the diff output shaft. For these axles, you must remove the differential housing from the left axle beam to access the snap ring (It is not as big a job as it sounds, just 12 bolts and some grunt work).

Tech Note 3: To Install
To install these parts, you MUST unbolt and remove the whole differential housing from the left axle beam. Once the diff assembly is out of the vehicle, you can remove QU40226 Snap Ring from the groove in the diff output shaft after which you can pull the diff output shaft from the diff housing./p>

Tech Note 4: Lubrication
Always pregrease the roller bearing and seal lip before installing the axle shaft in your diff housing with QU90018 or similar NLGI #2 GC-LB water resistant grease.

Tech Note 5: Verify
When starting the axle shaft splines into your Slip Yoke, verify that the Slip Yoke and Right Axle Shaft are as close to being in phase as possible. (The center line of the yoke holes line up to each other with little or no offset.)

Tech Note 6: Maintenance
IFS Right Diff Output Shaft operating failures are usually a result of a broken axle u-joint. Good preventative maintenance can usually prevent those type of failures. A good number of axle shafts are also wrecked by poor service procedures during u-joint replacement. Over the years I have seen a lot of axle shafts with bent or broken yokes caused by the slam-bang u-joint removal and installation methods. A C-Frame Press with the correct adapters is both the safest and best way to remove or install axle u-joints.
