Applications
Tech Note 1: Verify Which Fork You Need
All 1999-2001 Ford NV271F transfer cases that have an assembly number that begins with "F81A" will have QU20211 Fork using QU10164 and QU50673 Pads unless QA20216 factory shift update Kit (which uses QU10951 Pads) has been installed. Mid 2001-2004 Ford Parts Lists indicate most cases will also use the earlier Fork with QU10164 and QU50673 Pads, but the fact is almost all use this QU20198 Fork. So if you have a 1999-2004 Excursion or Super Duty, before ordering a new Fork, disassemble the Transfer Case to see what you have as QU20198 Fork will not work directly replace a 1999-2001 Fork using three pads.
Tech Note 2: Range Fork Failures
Range Forks typically fail when the Plastic Shift Fork Pads wear away. While there can be several causes of Pad wear, high on the list is dirty or low oil. Check and change your Transfer Case oil on a regular basis! Replace any Range Shift Fork that shows visible wear.
Tech Note 3: Matching Parts
Matching Parts for QU20198U Range Fork are:
QU10951 Range Fork Shift Pads (uses 2)
QU11000 Planetary Assembly
QU20265 Range Sleeve
Tech Note 4: New Venture/New Process/Magna
When Ford (1999 models) and Dodge (2003 models) first used NV271 and NV273 transfer cases, New Process Gear (NPG) of East Syracuse N.Y. was part of New Venture Gear (NVG). When NVG dissolved, NPG continued on under Chrysler. Chrysler subsequently sold the production rights to Magna, a Canadian automotive parts company. All these name changes are confusing, but the important thing to know is a specific assembly number for any 271F, 271D, 273D, and 273F transfer case is the same and uses the same replacement parts regardless of it was built by New Venture, New Process, or Magna.
