Tech Note 1: Axle Disassembly Required
The Ball Joints in Ford F450/F550 and Chevy or GMC C4500/C5500 trucks are pressed into the steering knuckles which must be removed from the vehicles to replace the Ball Joints. The hub-locks, brake calipers, brake rotor, wheel hubs, brake splash shields, Chevy/GMC spindles, and axle shafts must be removed before you can get the knuckles off.

Tech Note 2: Parts You Will Also Need for Ford 4x4s
For Ford F450 and F550 4x4s you will also need Knuckle Seals, Hub Gaskets, and Hub O-Rings which require replacement anytime the axle shaft is removed to prevent vacuum leaks and or water infiltration. On 2005 and newer Ford F450, F550 Super Duty® the axle shaft to knuckle seals are of a complicated unitized design that is easily damaged without the correct installer. To function with any longevity, QU20052 Seal must be installed with TS1531 Installer to a specific depth on both the axle shaft and in the knuckle. An improperly installed or damaged seal will allow water to enter and vacuum to escape. So in addition to your Ball Joints, you will also need:

QU20046 Hub Lock Gasket and Seal Kit
OR QK4681 Seal, Gasket, and Tool Kit

Tech Note 3: Parts You Will Also Need for Chevy and GMC
Chevy and GMC C4500, C5500 4x4s use a conventional dead spindle design with manual hublocks so additional part replacement is not required although you WILL NEED QT1215 Spindle Nut Socket. Even though it is not required, as a minimum, you SHOULD also repack your front wheel bearings and spindle bearings PLUS replace the following parts:
QU30468 Wheel Seal
QU52356 Lockout Hub O-Ring
QU40496 Outer Axle Shaft Thrust Washer and Spindle Inner Seal
QU40243 Outer Axle Shaft to Spindle Outer Seal

Tech Note 4: Optional Ball Joint Tooling
Our TS1243 (Ford), TS1244 (Chevy/GMC), or TS1245 (Chevy, Ford, GMC) Ball Joint Press Sets are the easiest and safest way to press out your old Ball Joints and install the new ones but it is not the only way. Other methods can be used, but you have to be VERY careful for safety reasons and to prevent breaking your steering knuckles.

Tech Note 5: Before Removing
Before pressing out your old ball joints, you MUST clean out dirt and crud from the area between the ball joint and edge of the steering knuckle counterbore before placing the Ball Joint Receiver in position. The Receiver must be able to seat against the steering knuckle. Failure to remove any packed in material will result in major tool damage!

Safety Note
Using any type of press can be dangerous due to the forces applied to both the tools and parts. Always wear eye protection. Most workplace safety has to do with having some mechanical experience and plain common sense. If you do not know how to safely work on your vehicle, have the work performed by a professional automotive technician!
