Tech Note 1: Dana 70 Axle ID
Dana Spicer Model 60, 61, and 70, axles all use the same bolt pattern for the differential cover so trying to identify what your exact axle model is can be difficult. In most cases, knowing the year and truck model will narrow the search considerably, but the best way to ID your exact axle model and internal parts is with the Bill of Material number that is stamped on a metal tag affixed to the differential cover by two cover bolts (See the Axle ID Section on our 1994-2002 Model 70 Rear Axle Web Pages).

Tech Note 2: 1984-1999 Dodge Dana 70
As an example to illustrate my Tech Note 1, this Kit has the correct parts for 2000 through 2002 Dana Spicer Model 70U and 70-2U Rear Axles used in many 3/4 ton and 1 ton Dodge 4x2 and 4x4 trucks. It will not work on 1999 and older Model 70 equipped Dodge trucks due to pinion seal differences. If you have a 1984-1999 Dodge with a Model 70, see TK4662.

Tech Note 5: Pinion Depth
If you are changing gear sets, your new Pinion Depth must be set before calculating the differential shim pack thicknesses. After setting the pinion depth, use a dial indicator and QT1098 Master Bearings to determine the amount of shims required to get the required gear lash and differential bearing preload.
