Description

QU40348 Dana 60, Dana 70 Pinion Seal for some 1999-2002 Dana Model 60 and Model 70 rear axles (No flange). This 1st design, shallow shell pinion seal installs flush with the front of the housing. A band of sealant on the back face of the seal shell will contact the inner face of the seal bore when the seal is fully seated in the axle housing. This Seal is designed to work with QU40397 Wiper V-Seal.

Applications

Tech Note 1: Seal Differences
Dodge and Ford only used these seal for a short time. During the same model year there can be a different seal. QU40097 may be found on some 2000 Dodge Rear Axles. QU40402 was phased in starting in mid 2000 model year axles to replace QU40348. QU40402 and QU40348 are NOT interchangeable as the axle housings are bored differently for the two seals

Tech Note 2:  To Install
Great care must be taken when installing this seal to insure that the face and body are not distorted.

Tech Note 3:  Grooved Pinion Yoke
A grooved pinion yoke will usually cause a new Pinion Seal to fail after a short time. Installing stainless steel wear sleeves marketed by most major seal manufacturers would seem like a viable alternative, unfortunately, this type of repair rarely lasts long. Why? A worn sleeve increases the diameter of the yoke by 0.020"-0.040". When a stock seal, engineered for the original yoke diameter is installed over a wear sleeve, the larger installed diameter of the sleeve causes the seal to run hotter and wear much faster than normal. Result: Rapid seal wear and presto! the oil leak is back. Usually, the only long-term solution is to replace the yoke. Other common causes of seal failure are installation errors, not lubricating the seal lip and yoke with clean grease, and object damage such as getting grass wrapped around the Pinion Yoke.
