Tech Note 1: Differential Shims 
Ford Dana 50 Axles uses Selective Fit Shims between each differential bearing and the differential case to adjust Differential Bearing Preload and Ring Gear Backlash. To increase backlash, the shim thickness on ring gear side of the differential is reduced and the opposite shim pack is increased by the same amount. This will move the ring gear away from the pinion gear and increase backlash. Usually only a very small change of 0.005" or less will be enough to move a close, but out of tolerance backlash reading to within specification.

Tech Note 2: Other Shims
For Pinion depth, Ford Dana 50 axles typically use QU40527 Inner Oil Baffle PLUS one of two shim types for setting pinion depth. Method 1 for 1988 and earlier axles had the pinion height set by a combination of QU40527 baffle and shims under the pinion bearing cup and a slinger shim between the inner pinion bearing and pinion head. Method 2 replaced Method 1 starting in 1989 for both new axles and for servicing 1980-1988 axles., Method 2 uses thick, selective fit shims between the inner bearing and pinion head and QU40527 baffle under the inner bearing cup. Pinion turning preload is set using shims (1980-1997 or a crush sleeve (1999-2005).
