Tech Note 1: U-Joint Type
QU40815 takes an external snap ring type universal joint made to Spicer 1350 series dimensional specifications. The u-joint cup diameter is 1-3/16". The overall width is 3-5/8". See TK40719 and QK4874 Universal Joints.

Tech Note 2: Dimensions
QU40815 is approximately 4-13/16" long from center of u-joint hole to end of spline. The 30 based on 31 splined end has one spline that is a double width spline so even though it has 30 splines, it will fit 31 spline axle shafts.

Tech Note 3: TK40719 Premium Cold-Forged U-Joint
When TK40719 Premium Cold-Forged U-Joint is used as an Axle U-Joint, the beefed up axle yokes on 1980-1997 Ford Dana 50IFS front axles can pose installation problems unless the inside of the yoke ears are slightly modified with a file. Once you modify your new or good condition used axle shafts, TK40719 will just barely clear the yokes as you pivot the cross into place. Since TK40719 is the strongest production u-joint I know of, I believe the slight inconvenience of filing the yokes is well worth the effort.

Tech Note 4: Slip Yoke
The Axle Shaft Slip Yoke u-joint connects to the right differential output shaft. Ford used two types of diff output shafts. Early production diff output shafts use QU40173 Tapered Roller Bearing Kit and can be removed by unbolting the 3 bolt external bearing retainer flange from the diff housing. Later production diff output shafts (circa 1983 and after) are retained by a snap ring at the inboard end of the diff output shaft. For these axles, you must remove the differential housing from the left axle beam to access the snap ring (It is not as big a job as it sounds, just 12 bolts and some grunt work).

Tech Note 5: Axle Shaft
If you are replacing your old slip yoke due to spline wear, you also need to replace the matching axle shaft. Installing a new yoke on a shaft with worn splines is only a short term repair which will quickly fail.

Tech Note 6: Before Installing
Always pregrease the axle shaft and slip yoke splines before assembly with or similar NLGI #2 GC-LB water resistant grease.

Tech Note 7: Installing
When starting the axle shaft splines into your new Slip Yoke, verify that the Slip Yoke and Right Axle Shaft are as close to being in phase as possible. (The center line of the yoke holes line up to each other with little or no offset.)

Tech Note 8: Operation Failures
IFS Axle Shaft Slip Yoke Failures operating failures are usually a result of either a broken axle u-joint or lack of lubrication for the splines. Good preventative maintenance can usually prevent those type of failures. A good number of axle shafts are also wrecked by poor service procedures during u-joint replacement. Over the years I have seen a lot of axle shafts with bent or broken yokes caused by the slam-bang u-joint removal and installation methods. A C-Frame Press with the correct adapters is both the safest and best way to remove or install axle u-joints.
