Tech Note 1: U-Joint type
QU40571U takes an external snap ring type universal joint made to Spicer 1350 series dimensional specifications. The u-joint cup diameter is 1-3/16". The overall width is 3-5/8". See TK40719 and QK4874 Universal Joints.
Tech Note 2: TK40719 Premium Cold-Forged U-Joint
When TK40719 Premium Cold-Forged U-Joint is used as an Axle U-Joint, the beefed up axle yokes on 1980-1997 Ford Dana 50IFS front axles can pose installation problems unless the inside of the yoke ears are slightly modified with a file. Once you modify your new or good condition used axle shafts, TK40719 will just barely clear the yokes as you pivot the cross into place. Since TK40719 is the strongest production u-joint I know of, I believe the slight inconvenience of filing the yokes is well worth the effort.
Tech Note 3: Replace
Always replace QU40088 right axle shaft seal anytime the diff output shaft is removed from the diff assembly. Pregrease the seal lip and QU40515 diff output bearing before installing the output shaft in the differential housing with QU90018 or similar NLGI #2 GC-LB water resistant grease.
Tech Note 4: Slip Yoke
When starting the axle shaft splines into your Slip Yoke, verify that the Slip Yoke and Right Axle Shaft are as close to being in phase as possible. (The center line of the yoke holes line up to each other with little or no offset.)
Tech Note 5: Pregrease
Always pregrease QU40515 diff output shaft support roller bearing and QU40088 seal lip before installing the axle shaft in your diff housing with QU90018 or similar NLGI #2 GC-LB water resistant grease.
Tech Note 6: Tooling
More universal joints and axle yokes are wrecked by slam-bang methods of u-joint replacement than by any other cause. For axle and driveshaft U-Joint press tooling, see our U-Joint Tools web page.
Tech Note 7: To Remove
To remove your differential output shaft from the differential, you MUST unbolt and remove the whole differential housing from the left axle beam. Once the diff assembly is out of the vehicle, you can remove QU40226 Snap Ring from the groove in the axle shaft
