Tech Note 1: Spider Gears
Most people call the four small gears in a Dana 30 or Dana 44 open differential "Spider Gears". The splined bigger gears are the Differential Side Gears. The two small gears held in place by the cross shaft are the Pinion Mate Gears. The Cross Shaft and Thrust Washers are subject to wear and should be replaced when doing any major differential service. Wear can be an be an issue on the gears themselves, but in most cases the "Spider Gears" will last the life of the vehicle unless they are subjected to sudden heavy shock loads or excessive power. Always use a NEW Cross Shaft Retaining Pin to hold the cross shaft in place.
Tech Note 2: Ring Gear Bolts
With most ratios, you will have to remove the ring gear from the differential to take out the diff cross shaft. Ring Gear bolts are not reusable, so order S9978 or S24200 Threadlocker and 10 QU40209 Ring Gear Bolts along with your Thrust Washers.
