Applications

Tech Note 1: Seals Boot Completely
I often see people use plastic tie straps or twisted wire instead of the correct stainless steel clamp in an effort to seal their driveshaft boot. Unfortunately, you can't get enough clamping pressure from those makeshift methods so water infiltrates into the slip joint. Once water gets in the slip joint, rapid spline wear occurs which will require the big buck repair of replacing the entire slip joint or possibly the whole driveshaft. If you want to seal the boot, use the right boot clamp which will positively seal the entire 360 circumference.

Tech Note 2: Clamp Tool
Using a QT4018i Clamp Tool specifically made to tighten eared clamps around the driveshaft boot is the best way to tension a stainless steel Boot Clamp to provide an air and watertight seal. If a Clamp Tool is not available, you may be able to get by with a nail puller or hoof nippers. Wire cutters could be used in an emergency situation as a last resort, but the results are often unsatisfactory.

Tech Note 3: Boot Maintenance
A boot protected driveshaft slip joint will usually outlast the truck as long as the boot is intact and there is some grease on the splines. If your Boot is damaged, REPLACE IT! If your Boot is OK, but you are doing other driveshaft service, always clean and grease the splines AND replace the clamps.
