NV5600 Mainshaft Nut Video

Tech Note 1: NV5600 Mainshaft Nut
New Venture NV5600 6 speed manual transmissions use QU10850 hex mainshaft nut to retain QU12049 rear output ball bearing to the mainshaft. The nut is non-reuseable as it is staked in place during assembly. Installation torque for the nut is 250 Lb.ft (339 Nm) when using QT2026 Wrench.

Tech Note 2: Mainshaft Holding Socket Wrench
In addition to QT2001/QT2036 NV4500HD or QT2026 NV5600 Mainshaft Nut Wrenches, you will also need a splined socket to prevent the mainshaft from turning. Use QT2000 29 Spline Wrench for 4x4s or QT2011 31 Spline Wrench for 4x2 transmissions. Both tools are 1/2" drive. Note: for NV4500 bench rebuilds with the top cover off the transmission, it is possible to lock the mainshaft by manually shifting the unit into two gears. You must ALSO strap the transmission securely to a work bench before removing or installing the mainshaft nut.

Tech Note 3: NV5600 replaced by G56
The USA assembled New Venture NV5600 6 speed manual transmission with a cast iron main housing was available on 1999-2005-1/2 model year Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks. Midway through the 2005 model year the NV5600 was replaced by the Mercedes designed and Brazilian made G56 6 speed with an all aluminum housing. The two transmissions have similar torque ratings.

Tech Note 4: NV4500HD Mainshaft Nut
New Venture NV4500 5 speed manual transmissions used a number of different, round, 4-slot mainshaft nuts from the factory plus there are numerous aftermarket styles. Our current QU10069 NV4500HD Mainshaft Nut is made to the original New Venture outside diameter and slot dimensions so it is properly sized to fit our QT2001 and QT2036 Nut wrenches and original Miller/Mopar wrenches. Be advised there are some cheap, imported NV4500 aftermarket nuts with undersized outside dimensions on the market that can not be removed or installed with either our or factory nut wrenches. We strongly recommend you apply either High Strength or High Temperature threadlocking compound to both the shaft and nut threads before installation. When using an offset spanner wrench like our QT2001 or QT2036, the Dodge factory specified nut torque for NV4500HD nuts is 270-280 Lb.ft (366-380Nm).

Tech Note 5: 5th Gear Failures
The infamous "NV4500 5th Gear Failure" is almost always wrongly blamed on the nut. Having your nut back off is a consequence of an inadequately supported mainshaft 5th gear on stock and full spline mainshafts. Radial and axial movement of the gear will loosen the nut. No nut design will prevent 5th gear failures although they may delay them. The only way to solve the problem is to redesign the shaft, gear, and nut set which we did with our now out-of-production Torque King® mainshaft sets. See Tech Article 5th Gear Failures and Solutions for more information.

Tech Note 6: Use to Line Up Transmission Input Splines
When you are mating a NV4500HD or NV5600 4x4 transmission to your engine, you need to align the transmission input shaft splines with the clutch splines. Shift your transmission into direct drive (4th for NV4500HD or 5th for NV5600) and you can than use QT2000 to easily rotate both the transmission output and input shafts until the clutch and transmission splines line up. Saves a LOT of time!
