Tech Note 1: Reverse Gear Ratios
QU10033 is a 15 tooth Reverse Idler Gear that is approximately 2-3/4" long. It can be used in any 1992-1996 New Venture NV4500 5 speed transmission. For 1992-1996 Dodge and 1995-1996 GM transmissions, the reverse gear ratio is 5.61:1. 1992-1994 GM NV4500 models will have a 6.34:1 reverse gear ratio. The difference in the reverse gear ratios is due to the different input gear/countershaft front gear tooth counts.
Tech Note 2: Two-Plane Reverse
1996 and earlier Early NV4500 transmissions utilized a two-plane reverse with either 5.61:1 or 6.34:1 Reverse Gear ratios. With a two-plane reverse, the front half of the wide reverse idler gear receives power from the countershaft and it uses the rear half to transfer power to the large diameter mainshaft reverse gear. The 5.04 ratio Single-plane reverse was introduced for 1997 model year trucks. The power transfer is inline between the countershaft, narrow reverse idler gear, and small diameter mainshaft reverse gear. The reverse idler gears, reverse idler shafts, countershafts, reverse gears, and transmission cases are not interchangeable for the two types of reverse gear systems.
Tech Note 3: Common Causes of Failures
NV4500 Reverse Idler Gear breakage is fairly rare, when it does occur, it is usually caused by pieces of other broken gears (usually 3rd Gear) causing the damage. Damage to the bearing bore inside the gear is a bit more common. Bearing bore wear is almost always caused by operating the transmission with incorrect or contaminated oil. The reverse idler gear is in constant contact with the countershaft so it is rotating any time the input shaft is turning. Crud in dirty oil can quickly damage the small needle rollers that support the idler gear. Installing a manual transmission filter kit can help rid your transmission of magnetic and non-magnetic debris and thereby reducing the chance of premature transmission failure.
