The 1988 model year marks the first year of GM's new GMT400 series aerodynamic body style trucks and the NP241C transfer case. Released in 1987, as a1988 model year, the new GMT400 trucks took over the "K" designation for 4x4 models. The old, square body style 4x4, which would remain in production for SUVs (Blazers, Jimmys, Suburbans) and heavy-duty 1 ton trucks through 1991 became "V" models (The change from K to V Serial Numbers actually took place in 1987). Most if not all 1988 V Model SUV's will have right drop NP208C but some later production vehicles may have a NP241C depending upon the drivetrain combination and build date. All 1989-1991 V Model SUV's were built with a right drop NP241C. The new aerodynamic 1988 K1500, K2500, and K3500 Chevy and GMC GMT400 series trucks were all equipped with left drop NP241C transfer cases. After 1988, the NP241C remained the "stock" transfer case for most K1500 and K2500 models through 1998 and it lingered on for a few select drivetrains all the way to 2000, but as the years went on, increasing numbers of GM full size 4x4s were built with optional manual or electric shift transfer cases.
