Warehouse

Pick, Pack, Ship

The core operations of any stocking online retailer, we utilize technology to assist in the picking process before doing a final verification on internal software. After each round of orders is picked and verified, they are routed to packing and shipping, a staging area to wait for out of stock items, or into manufacturing if some assembly is required.

As probably our "simplest" daily operation, it requires lifting of up to 100lbs (although most things are under 50), reading, counting, basic comprehension of how computers work (don't worry, we train you on the software bit), and being able to compare pictures to physical parts. We do things unlike most online retailers so there are several unique aspects to an otherwise straight forward process, however we do our best to provide the tools needed to make any learning curve as smooth as possible.

Receive and Put-Away

Maybe the most important task in relation to order fulfillment, as they go out the the door replacement stock also needs to come in. This gets a bit more advanced than simply opening an incoming parts order, checking quantity and part numbers against what we "should" receive from that vendor, and putting it away. This requires not only verifying against pictures but also any numbers on the item itself and not just the box it was shipped in. Some items are pre-packaged kits that will need to be verified for completeness, and any new parts in our system will need transferred to our photography area.

After everything is verified, there is the put-away. This will either be a shelf location, or in some cases a portion of incoming inventory will need to be put with an awaiting customer backorder. Some light reorganization of incoming or existing inventory may need to be performed, such as removing items from individual boxes to store in bulk on the shelf or redecorate the shelf itself slightly to better fit inventory as needed.

Maintain and Adjust Inventory

Usually not a separate position in itself, but rather a shared duty between picking and receiving. Cycle counting and item inspection are done as needed daily. This is an important task to support accurate and timely picking; ensuring quantity is what our picking system expects, parts are in good condition to ship as soon as they are picked, and there is adequate shelf space to safely store the parts without them overflowing to other bins creating the opportunity to miss-pick orders.

Sales

Sales and Customer Service

The "meat and potatoes" main course for any business. While a vast majority of sales are handled online, there is a fair amount of phone/e-mail and walk in sales. This position requires in-depth knowledge of automotive components to accurately find what the customer needs. Spicer or Warn locking hubs? Dana 44 or Dana 44HD front axle? 1455 or 1485 series u-joint? These are just some of the questions we routinely need to ask and instruct the customer on how to identify. A bonus level to knowing what the customer needs parts for are "localized" component terms. Is the customer working on the rear pumpkin? Or maybe the front rear pumpkin? They need an axle seal for a front axle, is it the inner or outer, or even the pinion seal that they really need?

While it may sound a little complex, someone with good mechanical knowledge can get through the day pretty easy. Plus, you get to hear all kinds of stories! This is probably one of our most interesting positions, as every day brings something new. Not necessarily is it always something good, but something new nonetheless. All from the comfort of one of our sales counter chairs!

Office

The Office

There are ALL KINDS of tasks that get assigned to this position. Reordering from vendors, verifying shipping addresses, updating customers with back-order statuses, electronic filing, the list goes on. Even our digital content and research fall within or directly work with office folk, but we will outline those further down.

Much of the office work is light customer service and general company support like e-filing or some spreadsheet tasks, as well as printing and assembling service manuals or other literature we've created in-house. The fun doesn't stop there though, the office position will frequently cross over into other positions just a bit do complete their task. Printed more books? Add to inventory and put away. Need to e-file? Go to the receiving area and pick up all the packing lists from that day. Not sure if a restock order looks right? Hop into the warehouse to do a quick spot check of inventory before submitting the order to our vendor.

While some of the spreadsheet work can get fairly complex, generally this is not an overly-complicated position.

Content Creation

Digital Content

Here's where things really get interesting and set us apart from nearly every other "auto parts retailer" out there. Similar to sales, an understanding of mechanical vehicle components is also required here. This is a list of some of what we create in-house!

Service Videos and Service Manuals

Service Videos and Service Manuals: While we lean more on the video side these days, there are some cases where we write service procedures for print based on the video. Some duties include filming service as-per manufacturer published service procedures, highlighting our parts, kits and tools in the video, and editing the video to the final cut for Youtube and Vimeo. Basically this is for a mechanic that no longer wishes to work on customer vehicles, but also knows how to edit videos. And like Waylon, just need to show your hands and not your face on TV... unless you want to!

Research

Research: Our most important behind-the-scenes position, this requires keeping up with parts applications for new model years, and also look back at old applications to ensure we have existing parts listed where they should be. This is done with online resources for later models, and great big paper parts books for older models. Occasionally used in conjunction with spreadsheets, we compile a list and cross check for accuracy. We do find errors in manufacturer-supplied literature, and try to fix it before publishing our own information online.

Exploded View/ Parts Diagrams

Exploded View/ Parts Diagrams: Often done alongside videos, we create our own exploded views. Requires taking part pictures in proper orientation, editing the pictures and arranging in an organized fashion, and finally link a parts list to the diagram. Taking pictures of new parts for product pages is also tied in here, since you probably have the camera already!

Part Page Descriptions

Part Page Descriptions: You may notice many of our parts have quite lengthy descriptions. Its all ours, derived from a combination of years of wrench-turning knowledge, research, a durable keyboard, and the means of organizing words into jargon that can be easily read by all, and hopefully understood by most. An author/ mechanic is the best description we have for this, although some may call it a unicorn. Whatever you call it, we try to write books about all our parts so the customer can make an informed buying decision.

Manufacturing

We make our own service tools in-house, and also have re-created discontinued parts that are manufactured elsewhere but we do the finish assembly.

Our in house tools are a pretty simple manufacturing process. If something needs a special tool, head int the warehouse and snag one up. Then, design a tool in CAD software around the part and any related tools currently in production, such as this new seal installer will also be used with our current driver handle.

Then a sample will be 3d printed to test fit. After that, raw material will be cut and prepped and a CNC program created/ machines tooled up. A real-deal sample tool will be produced, checked, and then bulk manufactured. Post processing will be performed before sending the final product to the warehouse for stock.

Since we also reproduce some items that have been discontinued, we also reverse-engineer parts so that they can be recreated. Any known deficiencies will be addressed so we can produce a better-than-original end product when possible.

Other manufacturing duties are post-processing or assembly of components produced elsewhere. This could include running finished parts through black oxide, installing bearing cups in a wheel hub, or verifying tube lengths for driveshaft production. In the end, there are a plethora of duties revolving around our manufacturing processes, so you never get bored just sitting at a machine!
