1973-1980 GM Dana 44 Front Axles use a double spindle nut set with a lockwasher for front wheel bearing adjustment and retention. The Inner Nut has a pin that engages with one of the holes in the lockwasher. The Outer Nut is a jam nut. GM used three different Spindles for 1973-1980 era Dana 44 front axles. From 1973 to early 1977, 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks have completely different Spindles. From early 1977 to 1980, the front Spindle is the same for all GM Dana 44s. None of these Spindles are interchangeable due to different diameters of the inner wheel bearing.
The dead spindle design of the 1973-1980 GM Dana 44 front axle uses a needle bearing to support the outer axle shaft. To protect the bearing and control axial thrust, a 4 piece set consisting of an Axle Shaft Slinger, Large V-Seal, Small V-Seal, and Thrust Washer was used. We have both Kits and individual exact replacement Dana-Spicer Spindle small parts for your hard-working 1973-1981 Chevy or GMC 4x4.
