1973-1980 Chevy and GMC Dana 44 axles have a total of four different wheel hub configurations and two types of lockout hub mountings. 1/2 ton K5/K10/K15 models all use internally splined wheel hubs. Early production 1/2 ton models (1973-1977.5) use smaller inner wheel bearings than the 1977.5 to 1979 1/2 tons, but all used the same solid drive gear (full time) or Spicer plastic dial internal mount lockout hub. 3/4 ton K20/K25 vehicles had a major hub design change during the 1977 model year. The early trucks have a wheel hub that is drilled and tapped on its outboard face in order to bolt on either a solid drive flange (full time) or external mount plastic dial Spicer hub lock (part time). Later production axles all used the internal spline type wheel hub similar to what was used on the 1/2 tons. For all Chevy and GMC Dana 44 front axles of the 1973-1980 era, the factory lockout hubs were made by Dana Spicer, but except for the axle shaft snap rings, no parts are interchangeable between the internal mount and external mount lockouts.
