Drum brakes were the only front brake option available when the open knuckle Dana 30 was introduced for the 1972 Jeep CJ and Commando. Drum front axles use smaller inner wheel bearings and wheel seals than those used on 1974-1977 Scout II and 1976-1985 Jeeps axles equipped with disc brakes. Three different front wheel Seals were used by Jeep for disc brake models. The ID and OD of these Seals are the same, however the width and lip design will vary by year. The outer wheel bearing for all drum and disc brake axles is the same. For the inner bearing, drum brake axles use the same bearing as the outer, but disc brake axles use a higher rated bearing with a larger ID bore.
