Most 1971-1977 Ford Bronco Dana 44 Front Axles were factory equipped with conventional open differentials. An optional Powr-Lok (1971-1972) or Trac-Lok® (1973-1977) limited slip differential was also offered. Depending upon the year, both full time and part time transfer cases were used to drive the front axle. In vehicles having full time transfer cases in which the front axle is always under power when driving, wear on the thrust washers and cross shaft can be expected on higher mileage vehicles. The differential small parts are the same for all ratios, but the ring gear flange on the case castings are different for 3.73 and numerically lower ratios and axles having 4.09 and numerically higher ratios due to the pinion gear diameter size for high and low ratios.
