The GM H052 and H072 series of axles all used the same differential bearings from 1946-1972. The original bearings supplied by GM's NDH Bearing Division had unusual, now obsolete, barrel-type rollers which are currently replaced by a taper bearing cup and cone. Although the taper bearing set will directly replace the original barrel bearing sets, individual components of the two types are NOT interchangeable, You can not use a taper cup with a barrel bearing or a taper bearing with a barrel cup. The differential bearing cup and cones MUST be replaced as a set. For the pinion, different, non-interchangeable bearings were used depending upon the year.
1961-1967 GM H052 and H072 rear axles use a Ball type, double row pinion bearing plus a pinion nose bearing. 1968-1972 GM H052 and H072 rear axles use a taper type, double row pinion bearing plus a pinion nose bearing. The two primary pinion bearing types are NOT interchangeable. Each Kit includes: Year specific pinion bearing, pinion nose or pilot bearing, pinion support gasket, taper type differential carrier bearings/ races, pinion seal, pinion felt, RTV sealant, gear marking compound and brush.
