GM used the full floating, 5,200 pound capacity H052 and 7,200 pound capacity H072 full-floating axles from 1946 to 1972. Except for the load carrying capacity, the two axles are nearly identical for a given year. These axles have removable carriers, 12-1/4" diameter ring gears and as originally built, NDH barrel type roller bearings instead of the more common taper bearings. The pinion is supported by a double row bearing set plus a roller-type pilot bearing. 1946-1960 and 1968-1972 axles used a double-row taper bearing set and have an adjustable load-bolt to control ring gear side thrust. 1961-1967 axles have a double row ball bearing and do not use a load bolt for the ring gear. H052 and H072 axles were good, durable axles typical of their 1940s origin, but they were expensive axles to build and by the mid 1970s, both the basic axle design and the bearing types used in them were nearly obsolete. The H052 and H072 axles were replaced by the GM 14 bolt, 10-1/2" ring gear integral carrier type axle starting with the 1973 model year.
