The now obsolescent Saginaw Double Cardan CV Joint used by Dodge on 1977-1991 Chevy and GMC full size 4x4 trucks was quite durable as long as the CV Centering Ball was greased every now and again. The simple Saginaw centering ball and socket is easier to grease, longer lasting and cheaper to repair than Spicer CV Ball that uses needle bearings especially under poor maintenance conditions. However the Spicer type CV can run at a greater angle.
The QU40817 replaceable hardened steel centering ball MUST be replaced if it shows any evidence of wear. Ideally, an expensive, specialized puller is used for removal, however you can remove the ball by carefully slitting it with a die grinder.
