All the Dana 60 front axles used in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4's were factory equipped with a vacuum actuated Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) system. The CAD system is pretty reliable IF all the many components involved are in good condition. Unfortunately, the advancing age of the 1994-1999 era Ram trucks is contributing towards multiple CAD part failures on the same vehicle when the intermittent failure of one part ends up wrecking other pieces. The three most common parts to fail are the Vacuum Actuator, Vacuum Hose Connectors, and the Transfer Case Switch (see QU10569). Replacement parts are still readily available and for those requiring the ultimate in reliability, we carry DynaTrac FreeSpin Kits (see TK4955).
