Gear set breakage caused by worn and loose Differential Bearings is one of the biggest killers of rear axles. When the differential bearings wear, the backlash between the ring gear and pinion gear will change. Most often, it increases as the ring gear side differential bearing usually takes the brunt of the wear. As the backlash increases beyond approximately 0.010", the chances of breaking a gear tooth increase dramatically. Additionally, a rough and worn differential bearing is very likely to break free and spin on the differential case which will usually mean the case must be replaced. With the Model 70, one often finds the differential bearing cups have worn sideways into the axle housing. Sometimes, the wear is minor and can be compensated for by re-shimming the differential, but in most cases, the axle bore faces will need to be re-cut with an Axle Bore Facing Tool such as the QT1000 or the axle housing will need to be replaced. To minimize the chances of wrecking expensive differential parts, I recommend completely re-bearing your 70 rear axle every 125,000 miles.
