The 1974-1979 era Dodge Dana 44 full time front axle is a live spindle design in which the axle shaft is supported by a splined wheel hub. The axle shafts and hubs turn together at all times when the vehicle is in motion. The outer axle shaft is threaded on the end for a castle nut. It is imperative that the shaft and nut threads are in good condition as the nut must be properly torqued to keep the wheel bearing set together. The outer axle shafts are the same for all models, but the inners are different for 1/2 ton (including Ramchargers and Traildusters) and 3/4 ton axles.
We offer three different Universal Joints for your hard working 1974 to 1979 4x4 Dodge Ramcharger, Plymouth Trailduster or W-100, W-150, W-200, W250 4x4 Truck with a Dana 44 live spindle solid front axle. All are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint. Our most popular choice is our TK40712 cold-forged, non-greaseable, original equipment replacement U-Joint. The wear-resistant cold-forged cross and superior sealing make it the best choice for both low maintenance and long life. QU90007 is hot-forged and is equipped with single lip seals. They are greaseable through a flush fitting threaded into one of the caps. With good maintenance and quality lubricant like our Pyroplex® Plus Grease, these joints will last and last.
