1988-1991 GM NP241C Transfer Case Identification

Right drop NP241C Transfer Cases are from old body style Blazers, Jimmys, and Suburbans. Left drop units are from 1988 or newer aerodynamic models. To identify the transfer case further, you need the assembly code off the round New Process Build Tag affixed to the center of the rear case half.

A common question is: What was the first model year the NP241C was used by GM? If you believe the text section of the of GM's combined 1985-1987 C/K and 1987-1991 R/V Parts Book (square body style trucks) the NP241C was introduced in 1985. The illustrated section of the same parts book only shows the NP241C for the square body style from 1989-1991. Since there is no question the NP241C was used in the new 1988 model year GMT400 aerodynamic body style trucks, the real question is did the older, square body style models get the NP241C before the new truck was released? We do not think so. Certainly we have never seen a factory installed NP241C in a 1985-1987 GM truck. We know for sure all 1989-1991 V series Blazers, Jimmys, and Suburbans had the NP241C. As for 1988 V models, we wouldn't want to make a claim either way without irrefutable evidence.
