Chrysler used the New Process NP208D chain drive part time transfer case for the Dodge Ramcharger, Plymouth Trailduster, and Dodge W100, W150, W200, W250 4x4 pickups from 1980 through 1987. The NP208D is a light weight aluminum case transfer case with a 1:1 high range and 2.61:1 planetary gear low range. The original NP208D configuration was non-synchronized and it was used up to approximately February 15, 1982. All subsequent NP208D units were synchronized between 4x2 and 4x4 modes for use with automatic locking hubs (1982.5-1984) or vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD, 1985-1987). The NP208D generally provides reasonable service for the average user, but it was never considered to be a particularly strong or durable unit in full size trucks used for tough vocational or off road applications. The NP208D was replaced by the New Process NP241D transfer case effective with the 1988 model year.
