The 1978-1979 Bronco and F-150 Dana 44 axles are open knuckle type (axle u-joint is exposed), and they have replaceable upper and lower ball joints pressed into the steering knuckles. The axle tube outside diameter is 3". Suspension is 3-Link, Coil Spring type with cast iron radius arms and a tracking bar. The bushings for the radius arms and tracking bar are replaceable.

Disc brakes replaced the drum brakes that were previously used up until 1975. The 1978-1979 Dana 44-9F disc brake front axle used in the F-150 Regular Cab and Bronco is similar to the 1976 F-100, 1977 F-150, and 1977-1979 F-150 Super Cab Dana 44 front axles, but there are a number of differences including brake lines, steering parts, and axle housings. (The F-150 Super Cab axle is also slightly wider).

1978 was the year the full-size Ford Bronco based on the 1/2 ton F-150 chassis was introduced. 1976-1979 F-150 and 1978-1979 Bronco Dana 44 front axles were available with 3.00, 3.50, or 4.09 axle ratios. Most 1976-1979 axles have open differentials, but an optional Trac-Lok® clutch type Limited Slip Differential was optional with 3.50 and 4.09 ratios. The 1976-1979 F-150 and Bronco Dana 44 front axle was reliable and popular, but they were the last beam axles used in Ford 1/2 ton 4x4s. For the 1980 model year, Ford changed to a Twin Traction Beam (TTB) Dana 44IFS front axle.
