1966-1979 Driveshaft Identification Ford Rear

Ford used conventional single Cardan (one u-joint at each end) for all 4x4 F100 and F250 rear driveshafts through 1973. From 1974 through 1979, Single Cardan rear shafts were used in most but not all of the 4x4s. Double Cardan Rear Constant Velocity (CV) shafts equipped 1974-1979 F250 4x4s with full time NP203 transfer cases and short wheel base F150 models after 1975. All the Ford 4x4 rear driveshafts of the 1959 to 1979 era were made to attach to fixed half yokes at the transfer case and rear axle. Except for long wheel base Super and Crew Cab vehicles, all rear shafts are single shafts with a slip joint at the transfer case end and a fixed yoke at the axle end. Long wheelbase rear shaft incorporate two shafts supported by a midship center bearing.

Ford used four different Spicer type external snap ring universal joints in 1959-1979 era Ford F100 to F350 4x4 and 4x2 Single Cardan Rear Driveshafts plus a fifth one for some 4x2 F250 and F350 models. Not all were available for every year and/model, but several different u-joint numbers in a given year and model depending upon engine, transmission, and transfer case.

Spicer 1310 Series (1959-1978): Most 1959-1965 F100 and 1959-1975 F250 trucks use two 1310 U-Joints in the Jack Shaft between the transmission and transfer case. First use of 1310 U-joints for Ford 4x4 transfer case to rear axle driveshafts is in some 1966 F100s. This is most common joint to find in 1967-1977 F100/F150 plus some 1978 models. 1310 Series U-joints were also used on 1974-1977.5 F250 Crew Cab 4x4s. Cup diameter is 1-1/16". Overall width of installed u-joint is 3-7/32"

Spicer 1310 x 1330 Series (1959-1977.5): An unequal length cross universal joint used on many 1959 to 1977.5 era Ford rear driveshafts. You will find these joints in the rear driveshafts of most 1959-1966 F100 and 1959-1977.5 F250 4x4s. Cup diameter is 1-1/16". Installed width of short span is 3-7/32". Installed width of wide span is 3-5/8".

Spicer 1330 Series (1977-1979): An equal length cross universal joint first used on 1977 F150 and 1977.5 F250 Ford rear driveshafts. All 1977.5-1979 F-250 and 1979 F350 4x4s use 1330 u-joints in the rear driveshafts. F150 models were built with 1310, 1330, and 1310/1330 rear shafts for 1977-1978. Most 1978 and all 1979 F-150 4x4s have 1330 rear u-joints. Cup diameter is 1-1/16". Installed width is 3-5/8".

Spicer 1330F Series (1979 Only): An equal length cross universal joint with two different cup diameters. This u-joint was ONLY used the axle end on some 1979 model year driveshafts. If you have a 1979 Ford 4x4, check the cup diameter required for your rear axle yoke. 1330F u-joints use 1-1/8" diameter, thick wall cups for rear axle yoke, but the cups that fit the driveshaft yokes are standard 1330 1-1/16" diameter parts. Installed width is 3-5/8". The reason thick wall cups are used for the rear axle yoke is to minimize cup distortion when the u-bolts are tightened.

Spicer 1350 Series (4x2 F-250, F-350 only): An equal length cross universal joint only used on some 4x2 trucks through 1979. Cup diameter is 1-3/16". Installed width is 3-5/8". May also be found on 4x4s with upgraded high-performance rear driveshafts.

Slip Joints: To order a replacement Slip Yoke Determine the u-joint series and measure the distance from the center of the u-joint hole to the end of the yoke splines. Also verify the spline outside diameter, number of splines, and spline length on the matching Slip Stub (most will be 1-3/8"-16 spline with 2-1/4" spline length). Replacement Slip Stubs are also available, but in addition to the the spline outside diameter, number of splines, and spline length, you need to know the driveshaft tube diameter and wall thickness.
