Jeep used an open-knuckle Dana 30 front axle with 6-bolt spindles on 1978.5-1980 CJ-5 and CJ-7 models with Disc Brakes. Small 1310 sized axle u-joints with 1-1/16" diameter cups are used to couple the 27 spline inner axle shafts to the 27 spline outer axle shafts. The front axle mounts over the springs, and a single hydraulic shock absorber is used on each side. Depending upon the year, available factory axle ratios were 2.72, 3.07, 3.54, and 4.10. The differential is a 2-pinion open type.
In mid-year 1978, Jeep changed the front disc brake design from a 1-1/8" wide Bendix rotor and 6 bolt caliper anchor plate to a 7/8" Mikasa rotor and a 2 bolt caliper anchor plate. The Brake Rotor is 11-3/4" in diameter. The brake calipers use a single 2.6" piston. The two-bolt caliper anchor plates are affixed to the steering knuckles. Concurrently with the change in front disc brake components, the rear drum brakes were downsized from 11 x 2" to 10-3/4" x 1-3/4".
Two serviceable, opposed, and adjustable Timken taper wheel bearings were used in each wheel hub along with a simple inner wheel grease seal. The bearings are lubricated with grease packed into the bearings at the time of assembly. On the outboard end of the hub, a non-reusable 6 bolt gasket is used to seal the drive flange or hub-lock. Wheel bearing retention and adjustment is handled by a 4-piece spindle nut set that includes an inner thrust washer, inner hex spindle nut, bend-over type lockwasher and outer hex spindle nut.
1980 marked the end of a Jeep design trait that endured from the Willys 1/4 ton truck prototype before the United States entered World War II. Jeeps first used the 6-bolt external drive flange or hub lock mount in 1941. It was used on all Jeep CJ and 1/4 ton military models until the end of the 1980 model year. For the 1981 model year, a 5-bolt flange mount replaced the iconic 6-bolt pattern.
