1979.5-1990 Dodge Dana 70 35-Spline Rear Axle Introduction
Page 2 of 7
Dodge used both Single Rear Wheel (SRW) and Dual Real Wheel (DRW) versions of 35 Spline Dana 70 rear axles in D200, W200, D250,
W250, D300, W300, D350, and W350 trucks from 1979.5-1990. These axles used a single locking spindle nut for rear wheel bearing adjustment and retention. The truck build dates will be from about January 9, 1979 to November 12, 1990. Dana 70B axles with 4-1/8" outside diameter inner pinion bearing cups were used from 1979.5-late 1984. Depending upon the axle ratio, either Dana 70U or Dana 70-2U axles with 3-13/16" outside diameter inner pinion cups equip late 1984 to 1990 vehicles.
1979.5-1990 Dodge Dana 70 DRW Rear Axle Features:
* Single Elastic Stop Nut Type Spindle Nut with Locking Wedge
* 1-1/2" x 35 Spline Axle Shafts
* 7/16" Studs, Split Taper Cones, and Nuts Retain the Axle Shafts
* 5/8" Wheel Studs
* 12" x 3" Drum Brakes
* DRW uses Larger Inner Wheel Bearing and Seal than SRW
* DRW Pickup and Chassis-Cab Axles are Different Lengths
All 1979.5-1990 Dodge Model 70 rear axles had a Bill of Materials tag (BOM) retained by 2 of the differential cover bolts. BOM numbers will start with either "603" or "605". Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and differential type (open or locking). Unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service.
