2010-2013 Ram AAM 925 14 Bolt Front Axle Introduction
The 14 Bolt American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) Model 925 5,500 pound rated Front Beam Axle with 5-link suspension debuted in the 2003 model year Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks. The differential and 9-1/4" gear set are more than adequate for the stock Cummins Diesel or gasoline engines and rarely pose major problems unless severely abused or neglected. However, the same cannot be said for the rest of the axle. Ball Joint failures with this axle are often a reoccurring problem due to the comparatively small size of the ball joints and the steering geometry of the axle. The life expectancy of the original wheel hubs and axle universal joints is only fair to good. Another known issue with these axles is the rivets holding the axle tubes to the differential housing can loosen up causing alignment and tracking problems.

Although all Dodge pickups since 1994 are often referred to as Ram trucks, 2010 is the year the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) officially indicates the vehicle is a Ram truck instead of a Dodge truck. 2010 was also the last year of the Ram 1500 Mega Cab which was the only 1/2 ton to use the AAM 925 14 Bolt solid beam front axle.
Available Axle Ratios were 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10 for all models except for the Ram 2500 Power Wagon which has a 4.56 ratio axle. An open differential is used. For Power Wagon models, the open differential is augmented by an electromagnetic coil assembly which can activate a dog clutch to lock both axles.
Effective with the 2010 model year, the front axle u-joints were upgraded from the AAM 1485WJ size (4.178" Inside Yoke Span) to the larger AAM 1555WJ (4.96" Inside Yoke Span). The regular 2010-2013 Ram 2500 and 2003-2012 Ram 3500 axles share the same parts.
The change over from the AAM 925 14 bolt non-disconnect, 5-link suspension axle to the electric Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) AAM 925 12 bolt axle with 3-Link front suspension was staggered over a two year period. 2013 Ram 3500 4x4s use the 12 bolt axle. 2013 Ram 2500 4x4s kept the old, non-CAD, 5-link axle through 2013 with some minor, mid-year design changes. Ram 2500 models were built with the new AAM 925 12-bolt, 3-Link suspension CAD axle effective with the 2014 model year.
Other names for the AAM 925 include Front Axle - 9 1/4 AA, 9-1/4" AA, AAM 9-1/4", AA925.
